On 5 December, Pothead come to the Backstage Halle. Munich is the last show of the year on the current tour schedule - after stops in Nuremberg and Stuttgart. I'll be there with my camera and I'm curious to see what the trio brings to the stage to close out the year.
Brad and Jeff Dope came to Germany from Seattle in 1991 and made Berlin their new home. While the music world was looking at the grunge boom in the Pacific Northwest, they were winning over their audience here. Heavy guitars, distinctive bass lines and a rich groove shape their sound somewhere between hard rock and stoner rock.
Released in 1999, "Fairground" became one of their most successful albums. Behind the scenes, however, working with record companies was less rewarding. Pothead had already founded their own label, Janitor Records, in 1998. After contractual disputes, "Burning Bridges" followed in 2000 - the logical step back to releasing music independently.
That independence runs through the band's whole history. Over the years, Pothead have taken care of booking, distribution, merchandising and design themselves. For them, the music also includes the work behind the merch stand and at the computer.
Since 2000, the band has also hosted "Potstock" in Hohenlobbese near Bad Belzig. Every summer the small village in Brandenburg becomes a meeting point for their fans, with concerts and camping together.
New music is on the way too: in the announcement for the "goes long Tour", Pothead name finishing a new studio album as their goal. They haven't revealed a release date yet. Whether new songs will already turn up in the Munich set remains to be seen.
Four shows originally planned for September have been moved to autumn 2027. The Munich show is still scheduled for 5 December 2026.
Photos and my concert report will follow after the show here on Rock'n'Pics.
