Bagpipes, heavy guitars and Teufel on the mic: on 23 October, Tanzwut come to the Backstage Halle in Munich. By then their new album "Herz aus Stein" (Heart of Stone) will be just seven weeks old. I'll be there with my camera and can't wait to see how the new songs work live.
The band's history goes back to Berlin's medieval music scene of the nineties. Back then, Teufel was playing in Pullarius Furcillo, among others alongside later In Extremo singer Micha Rhein. Tanzwut grew out of the Corvus Corax circle in 1997. For a long time the two bands shared several musicians, until they went their separate ways in 2010.
The combination of bagpipes, electronic elements and hard guitars has been part of Tanzwut from the very beginning. Over the years it produced albums such as "Schreib es mit Blut" and "Die Tanzwut kehrt zurück", which reached number 11 in the German album charts in 2021. For "Silberne Hochzeit" in 2023, the band re-recorded older songs to celebrate 25 years on stage. "Achtung Mensch!" followed a year later.
Their next full-length, "Herz aus Stein", has been out since 4 September 2026. The title track draws on Wilhelm Hauff's fairy tale "Das kalte Herz" (The Cold Heart): a man trades his feeling heart for a stone in order to become rich. Tanzwut bring this idea into the present - to a place where feelings get in the way and people are expected to function as smoothly as possible.
Sagenbringer open the night in Munich. After that, what interests me most is how Tanzwut combine the new material with their older songs. Almost three decades of band history certainly offer plenty to choose from for the setlist.
Photos and my review will follow after the show here on Rock'n'Pics.
